What is Online Gambling? A Beginner's Guide
Everything you need to know about online casino games — how they work, key terms, myths vs facts, and playing responsibly
How Online Casinos Work
Online casinos are digital versions of traditional brick-and-mortar casinos. They offer the same types of games — slots, blackjack, roulette, poker — but accessible from your computer or phone via the internet.
Every game outcome is determined by a Random Number Generator (RNG) — certified software that ensures results are completely random and fair. The casino's profit comes from the house edge — a small mathematical advantage built into every game. This is how casinos stay in business, not by 'rigging' individual games.
You deposit money, play games, and can withdraw your winnings. The process is regulated by gambling licences and independent auditing to ensure fair play.
Types of Casino Games
Slot Machines
Spin reels with symbols. Matching combinations across paylines win prizes. Video slots add bonus features, free spins, and progressive jackpots. The most popular casino game — pure chance, no skill required.
Blackjack
Card game where you try to get closer to 21 than the dealer without going over. One of the lowest house edge games — skill and strategy significantly improve your odds.

A ball spins on a numbered wheel. You bet on where it lands — a specific number, colour (red/black), or group of numbers. Simple, elegant, and exciting.

A blend of slots and poker. You're dealt five cards and choose which to keep and which to discard. The final hand determines your payout. Strategy matters — some variants return over 100%.

Bet on 'Player' or 'Banker' — whichever hand gets closer to 9 wins. No skill needed. The Banker bet has one of the best odds in any casino game (1.06% house edge).

Includes poker variants (Caribbean Stud, Pai Gow), craps, sic bo, and specialty games. Each has unique rules and strategies.

House Edge
The mathematical advantage the casino has over players. Expressed as a percentage — e.g., 2.7% means the casino keeps R2.70 of every R100 wagered on average, over time.
RTP (Return to Player)
The opposite of house edge. A slot with 96% RTP returns R96 for every R100 wagered on average. Higher RTP = better for players.
Volatility / Variance
How 'swingy' a game is. High volatility = rare but big wins. Low volatility = frequent small wins. Neither is 'better' — it depends on your bankroll and preference.
RNG (Random Number Generator)
Software that ensures every game outcome is completely random and unpredictable. Certified and audited by independent testing labs.
Wagering Requirements
The number of times you must bet a bonus before withdrawing winnings. E.g., 30x on R250 = you must wager R7,500 total before cashing out.
Progressive Jackpot
A prize pool that grows with every bet placed on connected games. Can reach millions of Rands. Triggered randomly — any spin could win it.
Free Spins
Bonus rounds where you spin without paying. Triggered by landing scatter symbols (usually 3+). Winnings from free spins are added to your real balance.
Wild Symbol
A special symbol that substitutes for other symbols to complete winning combinations. Some wilds expand, multiply wins, or have special properties.
Myths vs Facts
Online casinos are rigged
Licensed casinos like Springbok use certified RNG software audited by independent labs. Every outcome is genuinely random. The house edge is the casino's profit — not rigging.
Hot and cold streaks are predictable
Each spin/hand is independent. Previous results don't affect future outcomes. Streaks are a natural part of randomness, not a pattern.
You can 'beat' the casino with a system
No betting system changes the mathematical house edge. Martingale, Fibonacci, etc. can manage short-term variance but don't create long-term profit.
Slots pay more at certain times
RNG doesn't know what time it is. Payouts are determined by the mathematical model, not the clock. A slot that just paid out has the same odds on the next spin.
Higher bets increase your chances of winning
Bet size doesn't affect RTP or RNG outcomes. Bigger bets mean bigger potential wins AND bigger potential losses, but the percentage odds remain identical.
Responsible Gambling
- Set a budget before you play and stick to it — treat it as entertainment spending
- Never gamble money you can't afford to lose
- Set time limits for your gaming sessions

- Take regular breaks — set a timer if needed
- Don't gamble when upset, stressed, or under the influence of alcohol
- Use casino tools: deposit limits, cooling-off periods, self-exclusion
- If gambling stops being fun, it's time to stop
